You can gain access to the Internet through libraries, community colleges, universities, or your employer. You can also use an online service or Internet service provider (ISP).
An online service provides Internet access as well as additional services. An Internet service provider provides only Internet access. The ISP can be a local or national. If you are using an ISP, you should make sure they provide you with a local access number.
To connect to an online service or ISP, you will need a PC, modem and telephone line. Your PC should be fairly new, and your modem should be as fast as possible. You will also need communications software, and a Web Browser. Most Web browsers support additional Internet services such as email and FTP. However, other software packages are available to support additional Internet services.
